Mechanical Permit Packet
You can apply, purchase, and have Mechanical Permits issued via e-mail and printed on your own printer. It takes minutes to apply and permits are typically returned within 3 hours.
Who can apply?
The "property owner", which is the building or home owner, or a renter working on their residence, or a Washington State-licensed contractor who is registered on this site.
What is required to apply?
- An e-mail address to receive the receipt and permit
- A VISA or MasterCard
- A printer to print the permit and any attachments. Acceptance of an Acrobat Reader*** that allows permit viewing and printing
- If you are a contractor, you will need a registration approval
When do I need a Permit?
Mechanical permits are needed when installing or altering fuel gas piping, heating, ventilation, or cooling equipment within existing buildings. In particular, mechanical permits are required when:
- Relocating or replacing a furnace, fireplace insert, or wood stove
- Installing a gas log or gas log lighter
- Installing an environmental exhaust fan
- Replacing or relocating a gas hot water tank
Mechanical permits are NOT required in the following cases:
- Portable heating
- Portable ventilation
- Portable cooling appliances
- Replacement of any part of an appliance which does not change its location
NOTE: In accordance with the adopted Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and National Electrical Codes, "No building, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing system may be installed, erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, replaced, moved, improved, removed, converted, or demolished unless a permit has been obtained."
Can I request to cancel a permit issued through MyBuildingPermit.com?

How do I request a refund?
To request a refund of fees associated with a permit issued through MyBuildingPermit.com, complete you will need to fill out an online form. The refund will be calculated and processed in accordance with the applicable city code(s). Once authorized, the refund will be processed and a check mailed to the payee.
