Electrical Permit Packet

You can apply, purchase, and have Electrical Permits issued via e-mail and printed on your own printer. It takes minutes to apply and permits are typically returned within 3 hours.

Who can apply?

The "property owner", which is the building or home owner, or a renter working on their residence, or a Washington State-licensed contractor who is registered on this site.

What is required to apply?



1. An e-mail address to receive the receipt and permit
2. A VISA or MasterCard
3. A printer to print the permit and any attachments. Acceptance of an Acrobat Reader*** that allows permit viewing and printing
4. If you are a contractor, you will need a registration approval


When do I need a Permit?

Electrical permits are needed when installing or altering electrical service, wiring, or circuits in existing buildings.  In particular, electrical permits are required when:

• Installing a new or temporary service
• Modifying existing service or circuits
• Relocating an electric hot water tank, furnace, or other electrical appliance

 

When electrical plan review is required.


Electrical permits are NOT required in the following cases:



• Appliance replacement without modification to electrical circuits, such as dishwashers
• Appliances connected to outlets with a plug
• Repair or replacement of motors, transformers, appliances, recessed or other light fixtures, switches, or control devices of the same type and rating in the same location
• Taping joints
• Removal of electrical wiring

NOTE: In accordance with the adopted Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and National Electrical Codes, "No building, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing system may be installed, erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, replaced, moved, improved, removed, converted, or demolished unless a permit has been obtained."

Can I request to cancel a permit issued through MyBuildingPermit.com?

Yes, the permit will be cancelled and if a refund is due it will be processed in accordance with the applicable city code(s). If a refund is authorized, a check will be sent to the payee. Click here to request a cancellation for a permit issued through MyBuildingPermit.com.

How do I request a refund?

To request a refund of fees associated with a permit issued through MyBuildingPermit.com, complete you will need to fill out an online form.  The refund will be calculated and processed in accordance with the applicable city code(s).
